The martial arts have been around thousands of years, mostly starting with the Asian influence. To learn to defend themselves and to defend the kingdom, martial arts were taught to the military of most countries around the world. Martial arts were popularized by the movies and it has grown so much that there are martial arts schools for the very young to the very old. To learn and then practice the martial arts takes strict discipline and knowledge of the art. It is an art; it is not a way to learn to street fight. You learn it to defend yourself, only. That’s all it is about.
That is one of the misconceptions about the martial arts. There are many different types of martial arts such as karate or kung fu to mention a couple. Loosely translated martial arts mean military arts. The military uses it quite often to train for self defense and sometimes combat. To learn martial arts can also transform a small tiny person into one that will floor a three hundred pound man. Some call people that are trained in the martial arts killing machines. They can be, but usually it is used as the last resort. It is not taught to go out and get into street fights and the like, it is taught to learn discipline, on how to use the body and for fitness.
There is a difference between ‘soft’ and ‘hard’ martial arts. Hard is centered on more offensive moves, the striking techniques are delivered with extreme power and some painful blocks. A person can be knocked to the floor with one hard blow aimed at the right spot. ‘Soft’ martial arts are redirecting the energy, namely your opponents’ energy. It will throw them off balance so you can strike without them realizing you are going to do so. ‘Soft’ style martial arts teach the student how to move that requires little energy and to regain their balance.
So you ask if learning some type of martial arts, why avoid a fight if one is presenting itself? Well, it is called discipline of the mind and body. Not many people want to fight, if they can get out of a fight they will. But sometimes there is not any way to avoid one. So with the teachings of martial arts, it will allow you to size up the situation and go from there. There are bullies around whether it is on the school playground or on the street. Bullies will do anything to get the upper hand and make their opponent think they know more than they really do.
A couple of very popular martial arts are the Brazilian jujitsu and Muay Thai. Some people claim these are the most aggressive and deadly of all the martial arts. Brazilian jujitsu is locking the opponent in submission holds or can choke them. Muay Thai is used mostly in military situations as it is claimed to be the most dangerous.
